Judging photo competitions online is a regular part of my work. However, the time zone differences often mean that while I'm on the road leading a photography tour, I have to open my laptop and review entries while sitting on a moving bus. There are evenings when I return to the hotel only to dive into judging until late into the night, grabbing just a few hours of sleep before heading out again at dawn, backpack in hand, to capture images with my clients.

Judging photo competitions brings me joy and a sense of privilege despite the challenges. It's an honor to witness the creativity and perspectives of photographers worldwide, each presenting their unique vision and approach.

When selecting a winning image, the role of a judge goes beyond simply evaluating technical skill. To truly recognize a deserving photograph, one must look for the philosophy and more profound message the photographer has infused into their work. A judge must see beyond the surface, connect with the photographer's heart, and understand the story or feeling they wish to convey.

The criteria for a remarkable photo are not merely technical. A winning image speaks from within the artist's heart, conveying meaning and emotion. It's about seeing and understanding the unseen—the photographer's thoughts, feelings, and soul that shine through the photograph.
